IoT security is more than protecting an edge device while it’s connected to a network. At nearly every point throughout the device lifecycle, opportunities for tampering can arise – even at the manufacturing phase where components are integrated, the firmware is installed and identity is provisioned. In fact, ICs and devices in the factory or in the supply chain can be subject to malware injection, counterfeiting, key capture, overproduction, intellectual property (IP) theft, and the creation of security backdoors.
The economic damage of manufacturing attacks could be consequential. Attacks can potentially cost an OEM lost business, damaged reputation, product recalls and even legal fees.
