Two words which almost sound a cliché in the automotive world are safety and security. The terms are often interchangeably used. It is clear that there are many common traits in the general sense but they are not the same and definitely not interchangeable. In some cases, they even compromise each other. As an example- In terms of commonalities- both, safety and security, require detectability and adequate counter measures.
Duplication of streams or a selection of frames (such as IEEE802.1CB) can be used for detection of latent faults- which naturally relates to safety discussion but what is less obvious is that the diversity can also be used for security purposes to check for intrusion. In the same note, adding such a feature adds to the complexity of a device-, which in this case can end up as a single point of failure and thus the very same feature, which led to synergy also opens up discords.
In the first part of our presentation we will give an overview of how functional safety (ISO26262) and cyber security are handled in the context of automotive Ethernet devices and thereafter, in the second part, follow up with use cases to examine the synergies safety and security share and detailing out the many discords they have. Looking at the future of Automotive Ethernet- it is but inevitable that we need to deal with both and in the final part of our speech we discuss about ways and means to leverage the synergies and mitigate the discords.
