As cloud computing continues to drive investment in networking, Synergy Research Group estimates that annual worldwide spending on data center infrastructure has now reached $114 billion, with network virtualization applications among the fastest-growing markets.
Cloud service providers are using virtualization technologies such as network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) to reduce costs, while increasing network flexibility, scalability and reliability. The QorIQ T series products are the basis for market-ready solutions for new cloud computing data centers that need to deploy SDN and NFV implementations including routers, switches, access points and Intelligent Network Interface Cards (iNICs).
Today’s NICs do more than simply connect servers and other components to the network. They’re also improving network performance by taking on more computing-intensive tasks. Standard NICs, for instance, used to require three processor cores just to run the network switch functions, plus a fourth core to manage the creation and operation of virtual machines (VMs). The latest NICs, however, offload all the switch functions to their own processor, freeing up those cores for other uses.
We are working with Advantech, Interface Masters, Embedded Planet, among others on production ready, intelligent NICs complete with software that is ready for SDN and NFV deployment. The company has market ready iNIC solutions available today based on its QorIQ T Series T2080 and QorIQ T Series T4240 processors. In this video, I talk about these QorIQ processors for Intelligent Network Interface Cards (iNICs).
