NXP^® Semiconductors would like to introduce the new real time clock PCF85263 and PCF85363 A few of the features include Battery back-up, Time stamp for intrusion detection and Stop watch mode with 1/100 of a second resolution Real time clocks, or RTCs, are only good if power is supplied continuously. That means a battery back-up with low power consumption is required. Not only does the smaller battery mean less waste but you can achieve longer battery life without switching to a larger battery. A Supercap can also be used instead of a standard battery. Three time stamp registers are available and can be configured to register the first time an event took place, the last time an event took place, or the first or last time the RTC switched over to battery power. An example of the time stamp registering the actual time of a certain event is when a scheduled event takes place. There isn't any need to wake up the microcontroller just to record it. A safety switch can be monitored if someone opens the housing case, like if someone tries to manipulate the energy meter. Another event could be if the Supply voltage or VDD was lost and the RTC switched over to battery power because a switch is closed. For example to register when the main unit was stopped due to power outage. In something like a washing machine or dishwasher, it's important to know what cycle to restart the machine at. In stop watch mode, the PCF 85263 can accurately measure a time period with a resolution of 1/100 of a second. As an added safety measure, an alarm can be set in case the event takes too long.
