Technological advances in the areas of Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric —commonly referred to as CASE—have been
transforming the automotive industry in recent times. Vehicle manufacturers are moving to a data-driven, software-defined
approach to implement features simplifying vehicle architectures, enabling updates and creating new opportunities. For this,
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is collaborating with NXP on solutions that integrate its cloud capabilities with NXP’s edge
processing chips to support efficient embedded software and vehicle-data management.
Meeting the Increased Need for Efficient Vehicle Data Access and Management
Experts predict that a CASE vehicle will generate hundreds of terabytes of data per year, driven by the proliferation of vehicle
sensors. The insights gained from this data will drive a cycle of continuous improvement through new features, enhanced
capabilities and even new services. However, to realize these benefits, a vehicle-to-cloud data management strategy is
important. For example, cloud-native applications utilizing machine learning (ML) and digital twins can enable intelligent
vehicles to improve over time through secure remote updates. Yet, few solutions in the automotive industry enable access to
vehicle-wide data and at the same time work seamlessly and securely in the cloud.
Accessing and managing vehicle-wide data is a challenge. As vehicles move toward software-defined features, consolidated edge
processing becomes more crucial for seamlessly managing, analyzing and cost-effectively transmitting data to the cloud. For
instance, an object detection application might run in the advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) domain, but collecting
contextual information such as driver state, vehicle condition and road condition is essential to generate crash event
insights. For efficiency, the contextual information should only be collected when needed. In a vehicle, this translates into a
shift from using many independent small microcontrollers to using multi-core system-on-chip devices that consolidate vehicle
functions and the data generated.
Combining AWS’s Cloud Processing With NXP’s Edge Processing
With such changes, one can imagine how the synergy of in-vehicle processing and cloud capabilities can accelerate the automotive
industry’s digital transformation. The collaboration between AWS and NXP is a major step toward that.
AWS IoT Core,
AWS IoT Greengrass and
AWS IoT FleetWise are integrated with
NXP S32G processors
for vehicle and cloud data acquisition, processing and storage. NXP’s GoldVIP S32G Vehicle Integration Platform offers customers
access to these services for evaluation, software development and rapid prototyping – combining the power of the S32G processor
at the vehicle edge with the AWS cloud. Additionally, Amazon
SageMaker and
Amazon SageMaker Edge
can be used to build, train and deploy optimized machine learning models on
NXP S32G processors
. NXP also offers the Automotive SPICE-qualified
eIQ™ Auto toolkit
that supports deep learning inferencing in vehicles.
This IT and automotive ‘breed’ has created four key automotive services: intelligent deep vehicle data management, DevOps CI/CD
support for connected vehicles, fleet and connected mobility management and customizable data-driven services.
NXP’s S32G family now offers higher performance, memory and networking bandwidth. Explore the vast array of software enablement available for NXP S32G3.
More Possibilities From Real-Time Vehicle Data Access and Management
Integration of AWS IoT Core and AWS IoT Greengrass provides deep data access, edge processing and machine learning, enabling new
data-driven services. As a result, mobility and insurance companies can create new business models and provide cost-reduction
benefits to drivers that match vehicle conditions and driving behavior. Carmakers can also leverage vehicle sensors and other
data to deliver new user experiences and capabilities such as remote viewing inside and around the vehicle for convenience,
safety and security.
AWS IoT FleetWise makes it easier and more cost-effective to collect, transform and transfer deep data from millions of vehicles
to the cloud in near real-time. It is a tranformative capability for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and
fleet managers who are implementing cloud-native applications for digital twin modelling, event monitoring, advanced vehicle
health management, algorithm testing/improvements and product usage analytics.
For embedded software development and deployment, AWS and NXP offer an integrated solution that meets the demands of new,
software-defined vehicles by extending DevOps to rapidly deliver secure and compliant application changes and services. With a
CI/CD pipeline from the cloud to the vehicle, it evolves and improves products faster than the traditional software development
process.
The combination of AWS with NXP’s electrification and gateway platforms generates deep EV insights from the cloud. This solution
makes it possible to monitor and update fleet vehicles for efficiency and safety through driver insights, anomaly detection,
telemetry and optimization support for battery and energy management.
Conclusion
There will be an increased need for streamlined data access and secure cloud connection as intelligent connected vehicles
proliferate and new data-driven opportunities are planned. NXP and AWS have worked together to create solutions and developer
tools to accelerate the transition to connected, autonomous and electrified vehicles, marking a milestone in the digital
transformation of the automotive industry.
