“I’m a firm believer in collaboration and teamwork,” says New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineering Director Automotive Analog Guolan Song. “Teamwork makes the dream work.” She has been with NXP and our precursors since 1997, juggling various roles in manufacturing, global product and R&D departments. Today, she is mainly responsible for NXP’s automotive analog research and development (R&D) in Tianjin. Twenty-three years on the job, and still going strong. We recently caught up with Guolan for a lively conversation.
Guolan Song: Motor Excitation Control, which isn’t the best fit for the semiconductor industry. My first job was with a state-owned company where my work happened to be related to microController unit (MCU) applications. Then I joined Motorola, which was divided into four business divisions: SPS (Semiconductor), beeper, cell phone and base station. Because I had plenty of MCU application experience, I joined the SPS division. It was a big name company so it was a proud moment and a big step forward in my career.
GS: I’m responsible for the R&D of automotive analog products. I’m involved in product research, certification of new products, trial and mass production as well as product optimization. Designing a product from scratch and improving it until it’s perfect is my what team and I do..
GS: Many. Firstly, we have an innate quality of looking at a situation from a variety of angles. Secondly, I feel women are better at expressing vulnerability, which is a strength because not all issues can be resolved with a tough, aggressive attitude. Sometimes you have to take a soft approach -for example, technology- and production-related matters need to be dealt with flexibly to achieve a common goal.
Bright minds. Bright futures. NXP team members create breakthrough technologies that advance our world. The future starts here.
GS: I think women fare well leading teams because they inspire confidence and feel-good vibes, leading to more efficient team communications and work. I really hope more women join NXP in the future. And while we are on the subject, I just want to add that NXP has always advocated more women in the workplace. It’s also doing a remarkable job empowering female employees.
GS: Without a doubt, the work environment. Everyone works hard, cooperates well and strives for speedy execution. There is a high-level trust managers place in their team members that allows them to showcase their potential. It makes for a cohesive company culture, which really appeals to me.
GS: I have a colleague in Tianjin who often organizes lectures on traditional Chinese culture that I like to attend regularly. It has aspects such as the sayings of Confucius, guidelines for followers, etc. that are not only intellectually stimulating but also quite relaxing.
GS: I think the most important thing for newcomers is having a good attitude and a sense of responsibility. Don’t be afraid of taking initiative and responsibility. Cherish every opportunity that comes your way for learning and growth. I’m proud to say that there are many outstanding young people in NXP that deserve praise.
We Are NXP embodies, spirit and values of NXP, which is committed to advancing the world by making it safer and more connected. We pursue our ambitions through technological innovations designed to enhance the quality of life of our employees, our communities and the world at large, all the while ensuring sustainability and minimizing our impact on the environment.
